What is Poetry?

We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.
To quote from Whitman, "O me! O life!... of the questions of these recurring; of the endless trains of the faithless... of cities filled with the foolish; what good amid these, O me, O life?"
Answer: That you are here - that life exists, and identity; that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse. That the powerful play *goes on* and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be?

Ann

She cried again last night. As usual I had nothing to say but pat her to sleep. Almost two and a half years of continued weeping at night. Shouldering the burden of soothing a 7-year-old, what wisdom does a 10-year-old have to bring it to a stop. Lying next to me, sharing a single bed “Akka, where is mommy?”, the same question asked repeatedly, drowned only by the whir of the fan keeping us cool on  sweltering summer nights.   Looking at her this morning, you would never know the existence of her nightly griefs. Grandma held her hand whilst we both waited for our 6 a.m. school bus. Her short curly hair, dark blue primary pinafore, white shoes, slouching under the weight of her school bag pregnant with heavy textbooks, she looks so ordinary. Or maybe not, we both were unusually skinny and scrawny. Something we have constantly been made fun of at school; a few more years later down the line when we both approached puberty the bullying is only made worse for being flat ches...

Logic. Devoid of logic.

Your hands, they reach out. With no doubt, into empty space. Grab. Clench. Your fists, bring them close, place them under arrest. Close to your chest. Be at rest. Unclench. Stare! You stare, at empty palms. Cold, blue empty palms. Nothing! You've grasped nothing! Cold blue palms. They grasp nothing. A mind devoid of logic. You're bruised. You're abused, by its frolics. "Live! Live, I must!".

A fog of uncertainty lingers on the muddy bog ahead, Your presence is unwelcome, The trees frown at you, "Leave! Leave!" hoots the owl, The wolves begin to howl,  Its time to prowl. "Listen to me, my love, This forest is alien to you, And you are a stranger to it, Its hostility knows no boundaries, Take heed of what I'm about to say, The fog, my love, Embrace it you must, Surrender you shall not, Bleed, you may, Die, you must not. When fear arises, Let it have its due respect, But abide it you must not. Hold onto your will to live, It will guide you. Live, you may. Live, you must." You close your eyes, Inhale, And wage ahead. "Live! Live, I must!". GrymmRipper :]
